Introduction: Geometry for Artists Summer Incubator

What is "Geometry for Artists?"

In a nutshell, Math 150 builds bridges between the conceptual world of artistic expression and mathematics that underpin those concepts. Art students can learn to utilize geometry as they would any other artistic medium, building confidence in their craft by increasing the accuracy and thoughtfulness of their designs.

This summer, professor Dr. Kristen Schreck, James Miller (SXU's 2019 Outstanding Art & Design Student Award) will explore the opportunities this class presents, and practice Dr. Schreck's plan to integrate Geometry and 3D artistic design. This blog will serve as a landing zone for ideas, pictures, learning experiences and more.

In the fall of 2019, Dr. Schreck will teach this class to a standard size class of Art Majors that qualify for 100 level math course study.

Course Goals: 

This course will develop students’ quantitative reasoning skills through exploration of geometric measurement, formulas, and visualization in 2D and 3D. Topics include: representing mathematical information symbolically, visually, and numerically and verbally; interpreting mathematical models such as formulas and figures; drawing inferences; estimating problems for reasonableness, finding patterns, proving generalizations. Work of relevant artists will be studied to make connections with geometric concepts. Technology tools: dynamic geometry and vector graphic software, 3D printer, laser cutter. Offered fall.
